Manchester, UK. December 20th 2014.

Four smartly dressed men, who claimed to be from Italy, were arrested at the Portland Thistle Hotel in the centre of Manchester on Saturday and were found in possession of 2.5 million euro’s worth of fake euro 500 banknotes.

Manchester Police informed that the men who were driving two top range cars, an Audi A8 and an Alfa Romeo , both with German registration plates, had hired a conference suite at the nearby Piccadilly Gardens Hotel .

Around £100,000 of designer watches along with £50,000 of legitimate Euro’s were also seized.

It is speculated that the gang were part of an international organised criminal fraud, and the arrests were later referred to by Police as the ‘Italian Job’.

It is suspected that the gang were planning to lure local jewellers to the hotel suite in order to buy jewellery with a mixture of real and counterfeit cash.

Those arrested had given details of who they claimed to be but as they each had a number of ID cards in their possession at the time it was not possible to establish their nationalities.
