The owner of Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent and Puma has launched a legal action against the Chinese online marketplace Alibaba. The dispute centres on the ease of access to counterfeit goods via the business auction site which allows US shoppers to purchase fake goods in bulk.
Kering brands also include Bottega Veneta and Alexander McQueen. The Paris based group has failed in an attempt to resolve the matter outside the courts.
In a statement to the press, Alibaba claims to work in partnership with brands in order to protect their intellectual property. “We have a strong track record of doing so”, they added.
It’s not the first time Alibaba has faced action over illegal sales made using its website. The Company has appeared on the US Trade Representative’s list of ‘notorious markets’ in the past.
Fake branded Gucci hand bags are available for $2 - $5 on the website although this figure could only be negotiated for a minimum order of 2,000 bags. Originals are priced at $795 each!
