During Monday 22nd December, a guilty verdict was delivered for two Smith & Ouzman Directors on trial for corruption at Southwark Crown Court since November 10th
Christopher John Smith, a former chairman of the Company and Nicholas Charles Smith the former Sales & Marketing Director were charged with corruptly agreeing to make payments in exchange for a number of security printing contracts in East and West Africa.
The case was initially accepted for investigation by the UK Serious Fraud Office (SFO) in October 2010 and four men were charged with fraud related offences on August 30th 2014.
Timothy Hamilton Forrester, the former International Sales manager at S&O and Abdirahman Mohamed Omar, a sales agent for the Company were acquitted.
All those agreeing to make payments named but not charged were S&O agents for Kenya, Ghana and Mauritania and officials employed by organisations in those countries and Somaliland.
Director of the SFO in London stated: “This is the first SFO conviction of a corporate for offences involving bribery of foreign public officials. We are very grateful to the Kenyan authorities for their assistance in this case”.
Sentencing is due to take place on February 12th 2015.
